This is the third 'French' novella that I have read by Peter Davey. It is French in everything but language and I absolutely loved it. The author manages to imbue his writing with all the wonderful introspection of a classic French film and the reader can picture the Parisian scene perfectly. But let me go back. Marielle is about a French dentist whose marriage is in something of the doldrums. Henri has never been unfaithful to his beautiful wife, Madeleine, but when he helps a woman, Marielle, after her car breaks down in an underground garage, he is very, very tempted. The only snag is that although she leaves a bottle of expensive wine at his surgery with a nuanced thank you note, he cannot find her. But he tries. He tries so hard his wife believes he is having an affair. Henri becomes obsessed with his quest until eventually both his wife and his visiting daughter confront him. It is only then that he realises what his obsession has become. I won't say more as I wouldn't want to spoil the story for anyone, but this is the most compelling novella I've read since...well, since I read his last French book, Love and friendship. The dénouement of this beautifully told tale is perfect. Peter Davey is a master craftsman. His stories seem (deceptively) simple until you realise how clever they are and how brilliantly they have been pieced together. I cannot recommend this highly enough. Have I already said I loved it?
